Remembering Jo Anne Rother

Jo Anne Rother

Jo Anne Rother

From Barbara, Jo Anne’s sister:
“Sad to report that Jo died on Sunday, November 1, 2015 of cancer. Our hearts are broken, but we know she is no longer in pain.”

Classmate Sonia Chambers Hinkley posted this news on Facebook prior to November 1:
“To all my friends and classmates from Springfield, VA, it is with a heavy heart to have to share the bad news that Jo Anne Rother, is in hospice with breast, bone, and liver cancer. She is heavily sedated for the pain and has about a week to a month more of life. Please pray for a peaceful passing for Jo Anne, and for strength, comfort, and healing for her family.”

The R.E. Lee Class of 1981 sends condolences and good thoughts to those Jo Anne left behind. She will forever remain in our memories and hearts.

Big thanks to Jeri Miller Holland for creating a Facebook tribute to Jo Anne in our Class of 1981 Facebook page and contributing the text and images for this post in our website.

Eleanor Porter in March 10 Washington Post

The Washington Post published a wonderful article about female veterans honored at the Department of Defense 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration. The article highlights one particular veteran, Lisa Porter’s mother, Eleanor. The article shares 1st Lt. Porter’s experience serving at Fort Sam Houston in 1952 and how she met, and later married, 2nd Lt. Tom Porter. The article continues about how the two have volunteered through the Amputee Coalition of America, visiting soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. You will find the article on page B3 in the Metro section of the March 10, 2012 print edition. You can click this to read the full text of the article or click here to find the image of the full page online.
